To Ghana with love...
The resourceful women’s group (WIZI) at Zion United Reformed Church in Northallerton has successfully completed a challenging project to support a charity helping teenage girls in the Ashanti district of Ghana. Inadequate, single-use and unaffordable sanitary wear was often discouraging school attendance there. So the English women set to, in producing a re-useable, brightly-coloured, flexible sanitary towel which could last up to 3-4 years. Months of dedicated sessions eventually produced 70 multi-item packs - duly blessed at a special service shortly before Christmas, with examples hung like bunting on a washing-line around the pulpit! Our lead-planner Liz Styan has just delivered them in person, including a larger version to assist with continence issues in older people. Now the charity will establish further local production in Ghana as an integral part of its wider work to support education and women’s health. The boon of this vital improvement in lifestyle is sure to ripple ever wider - an imaginative, practical gift from Yorkshire to Ghana!
